The Tote Explained

The major difference between betting with the Tote and with a standard bookmaker is that you don't know for certain the price you are getting because it is pool betting.

This basically means that all the money gambled on a particular bet goes into a pool. The Tote takes out its percentage and the rest of the money is divided between the winning tickets.

As punters will still tend to be betting on the fancied horses, the returns near the top end of the market will normally be similar to SP but as fewer go for the outsiders, these returns can be considerably larger.
