Horse Racing Betting Glossary

Combination Forecast - A combination forecast is a bet on three or more selections but you are looking for two of them to finish 1st and 2nd in any order in a race. In effect, it is like placing multiple Straight Forecast bets and so the unit stake required increases depending on how many horses you include. 3 selections = 6 unit stakes, 4 selections = 12 unit stakes, 5 selections = 20 unit stakes, 6 selections = 30 unit stakes etc.

Combination Tricast - A Combination Tricast is a bet where you choose a number of selections in a tricast race, any three of which must finish 1st, 2nd and 3rd in any order. In effect a combination tricast is like placing multiple tricast bets and therefore requires multiple unit stakes according to the number of selections specified. 3 selections = 6 unit stakes, 4 selections = 24 unit stakes, 5 selections = 60 unit stakes, 6 selections = 120 unit stakes etc.

Each Way Bet - An each way bet is a bet on a horse to either win or place in a race and is covered in some depth in our article Each Way Betting Explained. It requires two unit stakes.

Goliath - A Goliath is a bet on eight selections in the following format: 28 doubles, 56 trebles, 70 fourfolds, 56 fivefolds, 28 sixfolds, 8 sevenfolds and an eightfold accumulator. At least two of your selections must win to gain a return. It requires 247 unit stakes.

Heinz - A Heinz is a bet on six selections in the following format: 15 doubles, 20 trebles, 15 fourfolds, 6 fivefolds and a sixfold accumulator. At least two of your selections must win to gain a return. This bet requires 57 unit stakes (hence the name, taken from the Heinz '57 Varieties' advert!)

Lucky 15 - A Lucky 15 is a bet on four selections in the following format: 4 singles, 6 doubles, 4 trebles and a fourfold accumulator. It is equivalent to a Yankee plus 4 singles so one winning selection will give you a return. It requires 15 unit stakes.

Lucky 31 - A Lucky 31 is a bet on five selections in the following format: 5 singles, 10 doubles, 10 trebles, 5 fourfolds and a fivefold accumulator. It is equivalent to a Canadian plus 5 singles so one winning selection will give you a return. It requires 31 unit stakes.

Lucky 63 - A Lucky 63 is a bet on six selections in the following format: 6 singles, 15 doubles, 20 trebles, 15 fourfolds, 6 fivefolds and a sixfold accumulator. One winning selection will give you a return. It requires 63 unit stakes.

Patent - A Patent is a bet on three selections in the following format: 3 singles, 3 doubles and a treble. It is equivalent to a Trixie plus 3 singles so one winning selection will give you a return. It requires 7 unit stakes.

Reverse Forecast - A Reverse Forecast bet is one where you choose two selections in one race to finish 1st and 2nd in either order. In effect, a reverse forecast is like placing two straight forecast bets and therefore requires two unit stakes.

Straight Forecast - A Straight Forecast bet is one where you choose two selections in one race to finish 1st and 2nd in the correct order. It requires one unit stake.

Super Heinz - A Super Heinz is a bet on seven selections in the following format: 21 doubles, 35 trebles, 35 fourfolds, 21 fivefolds, 7 sixfolds and a sevenfold accumulator. At least two of your selections must win to gain a return. It requires 120 unit stakes.

Super Yankee - A Super Yankee is a bet on five selections in the following format: 10 doubles, 10 trebles, 5 fourfolds and a fivefold accumulator. At least two of your selections must win to gain a return. It requires 26 unit stakes.

Tricast - A Tricast bet involves three selections in one race finishing 1st, 2nd and 3rd in the order that you specify. It is usually only accepted on races of 8 or more runners. It requires one unit stake.

Trixie - A Trixie is when you bet on three selections in the following format: 3 doubles and a treble. At least two of your selections must win to gain a return. This bet requires four unit stakes.

Yankee - A Yankee is a bet on four selections in the following format: 6 doubles, 4 trebles and a fourfold accumulator. At least two of your selections must win to gain a return. It requires 11 unit stakes.
